How e-prescribing keeps a human in the loop

A walk through Zenthea's e-prescribing workflow: the prescriber selects the medication, the patient chooses the pharmacy, and a clinician signs every script.

E-prescribing is a good test of a principle we hold across all of Zenthea: AI prepares, a clinician decides. Prescriptions are high-stakes, so the workflow is deliberately explicit about who does what.

The four steps

  1. The prescriber selects the medication. This is a clinical decision and it belongs to a clinician. Thea can prepare a draft — pulling the relevant context together — but it never selects the drug.
  2. The patient selects their pharmacy. The person receiving the medication chooses where it goes.
  3. A clinician reviews and signs. Every prescription passes through human review and signature. There is no path where a script is sent without it.
  4. The prescription is transmitted electronically. After signature, it is sent through DoseSpot to the patient's chosen pharmacy.

Why the human in the loop is non-negotiable

It would be easy to let an assistant "just send" a routine refill. We do not, and we will not. The safety of the system comes from a bright line: Thea only drafts for clinician review. It does not select, approve, or sign a prescription. That line is what lets a clinician trust the assistant without outsourcing judgment to it.

What we do not claim

We are careful about language here. Zenthea integrates e-prescribing powered by DoseSpot; we do not claim to be a certification authority, and we do not present Thea as a prescriber. If you have questions about how this works for your practice, book a demo and we will walk through it with your real workflows.

Frequently asked questions

Who selects the medication?

The prescriber selects the medication. Thea may prepare a draft for clinician review, but it does not select, approve, or sign a prescription.

Who chooses the pharmacy?

The patient chooses their pharmacy. After clinician review and signature, the prescription is transmitted electronically to the patient's selected pharmacy through DoseSpot.

Does Thea ever sign a prescription automatically?

No. A human clinician reviews and signs every prescription. Human-in-the-loop is the default for all clinical actions.
